Congressman Flood Supports the Recruit and Retain Act for America’s Law Enforcement

May 14, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued a statement following passage of S. 546, also known as the Recruit and Retain Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives. U.S. Senator Fischer (NE) is the original introducer of the measure. Passage of the measure comes as the nation observes Police Week across the country.

“Peace officers help keep our communities safe each day, and we need to do everything we can to support them,” said Congressman Flood. “This commonsense measure provides reasonable flexibility to the existing COPS grant program at a time when law enforcement agencies are facing headwinds in recruiting new officers. I applaud Senator Fischer and the bipartisan coalition that helped deliver this important legislation, and I urge President Biden to sign it into law.”

S. 546 expands the eligible criteria for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program to permit initiatives related to recruitment and retention. Additionally, the bill creates a new COPS Pipeline Partnership Program to foster collaboration between schools and law enforcement agencies to reach the next generation of peace officers.

Earlier this year, Congressman Flood launched “Nebraska Backs the Blue” to attract more law enforcement officers to Nebraska. More information about the effort can be found by clicking here
