Congressman Flood: The Laken Riley Act Will Make Our Communities Safer

January 7, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued a statement after voting in favor of H.R. 29, also known as the Laken Riley Act.

“After four years of President Biden’s open border policies, every state in America has truly become a border state. Biden’s policies and rhetoric have resulted in millions of people breaking our laws to enter America illegally, including tens of thousands who have additional criminal records. The Laken Riley Act is a critical step towards ensuring that law enforcement and prosecutors have all the tools they need to detain and deport criminals who’ve entered our country illegally, so that we can keep Americans safe. This is the first legislation in the new Congress, and I look forward to Senate passage of this commonsense bill as our new Republican majority works to tee up legislative wins for President Trump as he hits the ground running on January 20th.”

The bipartisan bill, which was passed in the House today as well as in the previous Congress, requires the detention of illegal aliens who commit theft and allows a state to sue the Federal government on behalf of their citizens for not enforcing the border laws, particularly in the case of parole.
