Congressman Flood Addresses Housing Summit in Columbus

January 24, 2024

COLUMBUS, NEBRASKA – On Tuesday, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood appeared as a special guest at a summit on the future of housing in Nebraska. The summit was hosted by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce in Columbus, Nebraska with more than 200 people in attendance.

“Communities around Nebraska’s First Congressional District and across the state are creatively addressing housing shortages as they seek to grow,” said Congressman Flood. “Columbus is a great example of a community success – the city’s population has jumped. Some would point to the community’s ongoing commitment to build workforce housing as a driver for that growth. The summit helped spotlight the success of Columbus, highlight challenges that can be worked on, and share solutions that other communities can replicate as they work to make themselves a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”

At the summit, Congressman Flood delivered the keynote address and helped host a panel featuring the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the Regional Administrator of HUD Great Plains Office (Region VII), representatives from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and other local leaders.

During the program, federal officials heard directly from local stakeholders about the barriers facing Nebraskans seeking to become homeowners as well as success stories about how communities are building creative housing solutions. In his remarks, Congressman Flood briefed attendees on housing market data and the market forces potential home buyers and home builders are currently experiencing.
