Congressman Flood: House Republicans Fighting to Keep the Government Open

September 29, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued the following statement as Congress continues to consider appropriations bills and a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government beyond September 30th. With the fiscal year ending this weekend, and without all twelve appropriations bills or a CR passed by Congress and signed by the President, non-essential government functions will be curtailed.

“I strongly oppose shutting down the government and want to avoid it at all costs. Congress is continuing to work on passing appropriations bills that reduce government spending. That’s why I’ve voted for the appropriations bills and C.R., which would get the government’s spending craze under control, secure our southern border, and keep the federal government open and working.”

“The failure of President Biden and Senate Democrats to come to the table to negotiate with Republicans has made it even more likely that the federal government will shut down this weekend. Speaker McCarthy has been working around the clock to make a deal, and I’m confident that he will find a way to end the looming shutdown as all parties come to terms with the need to compromise.”
